Audience Feedback

From our audience feed back we have found out  what they think of our CD cover. We asked our audiences 4 different questions:
 1) Is creativity clearly demonstrated in the CD cover?
 2) The colours you see pink, yellow and blue, do you think they are appropriate to a Dance Pop genre?
 3) How do they make you feel?
 4) Would you buy it?
All the responses we got back from our audience were positive and interesting to hear. This will help us know what is working well on our cover and which things we could improve to make it even better.
Each member of our group got individuality peer marked by someone in our class who has not been working on the album or advert as I and my group have. From the results we got Even better if? and What went well? The grade at the end was the grade which this student had given our group for the advert as well as the CD cover.
What went well for the advertisement?
Good placement of the CD on the advert.
I like the way the text colour matches the shirt.

Even Better if?
Aim is quite dark
Say a song that could be included in the CD

CD cover- What went well?
Effect on the eye shot is very good.
Good variety of Shots.

CD cover- Even better if?
Tattoo shot seems a bit dark and out of place compared to the rest.
Font seems more urban than pop.

My group and I will take on board all these comments and make alterations where needed.

Talent Release Form

Attached below is the copy of the talent release form that we gave to all the actors whom we wanted to feature in our media music video.

Here is the original talent release form that was distributed to each individual:

Here are the signed forms:

Your image is loading...
The talent release forms were given to each individual actor who was going to be featured in our music video. Their signature gave us permission to use them as a character in our work; it also tells them how and when we will film them, and where the final product will be distributed and shown. Having read it, and signed it, they knew what they were letting themselves in for. Not only the actors had to sign forms: our group needed to sign on behalf of ourselves and our production company to show that we are the only ones who have permission to use them in this way to promote our products.

Location Permission

Box Hill:
We were originally going to film at Primrose Hill but because of our budget limitations and how much it would cost, unfortunately we were not able to film there; instead we are filming in Box Hill. This is the location letter which we sent out to Box Hill to ask for permission to use their land for filming and to ask whether they had any problem with us basing some scenes there. So far we have not had a reply back saying we cannot, so we will interpret this as a positive and proceed to film there.

This screen grab shows the email which we sent to ask permission to use their home gym when filming. The response we got back was positive and the person was delighted that we wanted to film there and they hoped it was to our liking.
This is the location permission letter that we sent to the head of drama to ask if we would be able to film using one of the drama rooms.

Photo-shoot Plan

This is our Photo-shoot Plan for when we will be photographing the artist and characters for our album and advert. This shows the different kinds of equipment that we will need and the outfits together with all the information that is useful for the photo shoot.

Advert Designs

How to create this advert?:
This advert will be created using Photoshop. It will consist of 8 layers. Each of the layers is as follows:
  • Background layer ( Fence)
  • Layer 1 ( Main actor- Scott Wells)
  • Layer 2 ( Interrogation character)
  • Layer 3 ( Work character)
  • Layer 4 ( Dancer 1)
  • Layer 5 (Dancer 2)
  • Layer 6 ( Punch bag and fist ( Opacity to be lowered))
  • Layer 7 (black background to the writing)
  • Layer 8 ( Text layer " FRAMES,NOT GIVING IN SINGLE OUT JULY 2013")
This advert design will include all the characters, but whilst the main actor will be featured prominently in colour, the supporting characters will all be in black and white.  The fence as the background layer will represent the way in which all the characters are sitting on the fence, undecided between giving in or not giving in to pressure.

However, we also have another idea which is just to focus the advert cover on the main artist instead of using the other characters. We think this might be more effective in drawing attention to him and underlining the importance of the freedom he represents.

Shooting Schedule

We use a shooting schedule to plan out when we are going to film and the various equipment and performers we will need for each of the different locations. As well as this, we will also write down the different costumes which the characters will be needing to wear in the shot. This will help us be organized on the day and make sure that we have everything that we might need.

Costume, Props, Make Up and Equipment

Track Permission Letter.

This is the track permission letter that we sent to Henry for use of his song 'Not Giving In'. We needed to ask permission because otherwise we could be considered to be violating copyright, and if caught, we could end up having to pay a fine or worse. So we asked Henry if he would mind if we borrowed his song for the purposes of our coursework only. So far we have not received a response so we will interpret this as a positive and continue to use the song.

CD cover designs

About the CD cover design ( extra info):

  • The blurb with the text 'Not Giving In' is meant to be a bright yellow. This represents crime scene tape and is meant to create a link with the interrogation room in the music video and hinted at in the CD cover.
  • The second blurb on the CD cover where it says 'Scott, Fiona, Rachele' will be changed to 'Frames' when we come to create the real product. The background to the writing is meant to be reminiscent of Police tape, once again to suggest to the audience the interrogation room.
  • The back cover illustration is meant to show the main singer moving/spinning around. I was thinking the middle one could be still whilst the two at the sides would be shot using Fast Shutter Speed (15-20). This would express the freedom that the main singer is feeling relative to the others.
  • The illustration across from the front cover shows a close up of three of the characters who feature in the video ( main singer at the front, interrogation girl and boxer man at the end). The girl in the middle has smeared lipstick across her cheek.
  • I decided to use the fence behind them because it could illustrate the way in which they are sitting on the fence between giving in to pressure and being strong.
  • I thought we could use the image of the clock from the interrogation room in the space where the CD will be placed. I thought this would work because when people look at the CD in the cover they see it and think the background is plain but when they remove the disc they find out what is hidden underneath.
Another idea for the front cover of the album:
  • The idea behind this front cover design came to me because our music piece manifests a lot of emotion through the struggle of not giving in to stress. Eyes are said to be the 'windows to the soul' and it is often the case that people can tell when something is wrong with someone by looking in their eyes. This made me think of creating a cover of the artist's eye and inside the eye is the title of the album and who it is by. This idea and concept by itself would challenge the stereotype cover designs for disco pop genre CD. However, another idea I had for this was that the eye could be peering through the background of the artist enough to see the title of the CD and the creators, or layered on top.
  • The other idea I had for the eye as the front cover was to replace the iris with one of the locations or with something that has featured in the music video ( plus the name of the album and the creators.)

Locations

The first location that will be featured in our music video is Primrose Hill. We have decided to use this location because it will help portray how free the singer is feeling in the song. This location also contrasts with the other ones as it conveys the opposite atmosphere.

The second location which is being featured in the music video is the drama room at Glenthorne. The reason  we have chosen this location is because it pitch black and also has a spot light. This will help to portray the interrogation room scene.

The next location is the office. The reason for this is to show the stress inside the office and juxtapose this with the freedom described by the outside scenery.

The last location is a gym. We decided on a gym because we wanted a boxing bag and someone punching it as this would show the character releasing his frustration and not giving in to pressure or allowing it to take him over.

Story Boarding

Story boarding in lesson images:
We photographed each other working on our story boards, and the bottom picture shows all three of us being productive at this task. We were each given a location to work on and we discussed as a group what types of shots we would want to see in that location. We recognised that our genre of disco pop music videos makes frequent use of close-ups, and that these would be useful for showing a character's facial and body expressions conveying the frustration of not giving in. Once all the story boarding is planned out we will then start deciding in what order to put the different locations, so that we have a plan to follow when filming.

Image Annotation

I have two costume ideas for the interrogation room scene: The first concept is a leather jacket, plain t-shirt, dirty jeans and shoes. I thought this could be a good idea is because it would create focus on the mise en scene and contrast in a positive way with the formal mood and setting.

The second costume concept for the music video is also a rough look but just expressed in a different way. The features in the second outfit are an old checked shirt, plain t-shirt, old jeans and casual shoes. I feel that both of these 'giffs' could work for the interrogation room.

These outfits are seen as edgy and stylish. We have chosen to base our artist wearing outfits such as these because we think it would fit with the genre of the music. The first two 'giffs' that the viewer can see are two options that we are choosing between for the artist to wear in the interrogation location. These two outfits give him a worn out and stressed appearance. This will fit well with the location.

The other two outfits are for the field scene and the street scene. They both still have a classy edgy look that will link in with the genre of the music. The 'giff' below with the white shirt seems like a more sophisticated appearance to the artist in comparison to the other outfits on this page.
These outfits make me think of famous artists and actors who might be seen wearing these types of clothing. An example is Olly Murs:
The actor whose fashion sense reminds me of the style in these 'giffs' is Robert Sheehan. An example his fashion sense is shown underneath:

Song Details

I have chosen the song by Rudimental called 'Not Giving In', featuring John Newman and Alex Clare. The reason why we chose this song is because it fits with our genre called Dance Pop.

Photoshop Technical Skills

CD Cover

The first thing that we did when creating this CD cover was to take pictures. We decided to use close ups of a person as we found out in our research that they are often featured in our Pop Genre. The next step to creating our CD cover is to open up Photoshop and set the template to the size of a CD cover. We then used the ruler tool to split the page where the text was going to be. This helped us work out where we wanted to position everything. We got the background of Google images, where we typed in neon blue and found this patterned background. Before putting in the new background, the old one has to be removed; this is done using the 'Magic Wand Tool'. We had numerous layers but by moving them about we were able to make it work. To add text we used the 'Text tool'.Our group decided to call our album ' Making Waves' because we thought it would link strongly with the background. On the back we made up songs which we thought could be featured in this album. We also used two different images on the back to provide interest. Once this was all done we decided to 'Merge' the whole piece together and save it as a 'JPEG'.

Green Screen Practise

How To Use the Green Screen and Change The Background When Editing.
.The first thing we did was to clear the space in which we were to work and to set up the green screen and props for the music video.
.When we had our actors in place and the song and props and technical equipment ready we began to film the footage. Because we had three cameras working on set (two on a tripod and one on a fig rig) we were able to use three different sets of footage from different angles in our video.
.Once it was all filmed we packed all the equipment away and returned the room to the way it was before.
. We were placed in our media groups for the editing part and because there were 3 different memory cards and 4 different groups we had to take turns in uploading the footage on to Imovie.
. When all the footage was uploaded and optimised we began to edit it on Quick Time Conversion.
. We chose a background from Google to replace the green screen and used the Chroma Keyer effect. With this we selected the pipette tool, and to bring more of the background forward I needed to press the shift key as well as the pipette tool. This has to be done to each of the sets of footage so that the audience can still see the performer as well as a non-green screen background.
. We used the "Peeling of the Onion" technique where you align the three filming tracks in synch with the music and use the blade tool to cut randomly in each track, making sure none of them overrun each other as the dominant footage could then be seen through the background which would be confusing.
. Rendering is a key part of the green screen edit technique because if it is not rendered then a red line will appear and a blue sign with white writing will say "RENDER". This means no one will be able to watch or listen as the sign will not disappear until the rendering has been done. Render at the end as well just to be on the safe side to be sure it uploads and exports properly.
. Once all the footage had all been edited and we were happy with it we saved and exported it. The last stage is to upload it on to Youtube to then be able to embed it on to our blog.
. Our group has decided that we are unlikely to use this technique for two reasons: in the first place our audience research did not approve of a pop video using a green screen; also this technique does not fit in well with our genre as it is seen more in Rock videos.

Audience Results to our questionnaire

This image above shows how many participants took part in our survey and how many of them were males and females. The viewer can see from the results that more females took part in comparison to males. The graph below shows the age range of the survey participants. Most of the audience that took part were aged 13 to 18. This helps to show who are main target audience are.

The red graph show what the audiences favourite genre of music is. As the viewer can a huge number of people listen to Indie Rock. The result that we got for people who liked to listen to Disco pop were 9 people in total. However, this is just out of the people who we asked. If we asked the whole population or smaller the whole of our school I am sure we would of gotten a stronger number of people who listen to Dance Pop.

We then decided to openly question the participants and ask them " what would they like to see in a music video?" We got a range of replies from this question. The other question we asked the audience was "What do you expect to see in a Disco Pop music video?" Again our results were mixed as people have different opinions on what they would like to see.

In the first graph we asked the audience "Would they want to see a narrative in a Disco Pop video?"  The results were close for this, but the result that won was the answer No. The next question we asked were "In adverts and music videos for disco pop, would you rather see low key lighting or the artists own style?" The vote that won was the artist own style.

The purple pie chart shows the result for the question which we asked the participants " What you rather see, The artist taking on a fictional role or  close ups of the actual artist themselves performing or both." The stronger result that we got from this was the answer "both." The blue pie chart shows the results to the question "After watching a music video do you then go and buy/download the single or album?" The higher result is "sometimes." Then orange pie chart was based on the question "What location would you rather see in a disco pop music video?" The dominant answer that we got from this was "Unconventional locations." This will be an exciting idea for our work as we begin to explore the different uncoventional locations that we could use for our song.

This line chart shows the results for the number of daily responses we got on our questionnaire.

Audience research

I created this audience research survey to find out peoples opinion on the genre Disco Pop and what they think should be seen in a music video. This was created on google docs.

Three Album Adverts

When analysing this music poster the audience can see that the mise-en-scene reflects the stereo typical view on Pop music. What I mean by this is that pop music is associated as being up-beat and happy and uses bright colours as well as high key lighting and also very expressive with its lyrics. The bright pink used in the title represents to the audience the mischievous attitude of Katy Perry. This also shows how pop can be pursued in this genre. The use of prop in this advert portrays an innocent impression to it such as the paddling pool, rubber duck and the lolly pop.  With the use of these props she is attracting her who is young civilians. These props and her clothing portray a young girl wanting to have fun. The clothing worn by Katy Perry is quite revealing but it does not make her look inappropriate. She has shown the mischievous attitude through the clothing which associates  itself with the title of the song “I Kissed A Girl.” The facial expression makes the audience feel that she is unapproachable and is hiding something from us. The other body language that contributes to this is the hand hidden behind the back.

The second advert that I am going to analyse is the Britney Spears Poster for her album called the “Circus”. The mise- en- scene of this poster is set inside a circus tent; this contributes to the title of the album. The font and title colouring used in this poster represents different things to the audience such as the bright colours used could portray the liveliness and the fun of the circus. The colours could also represent to the audience the dangerous and flirtatious attitude that Britney Spears brings to her music. The outfit that she is wearing links in with the theme of her cover and has a few stereo typical characteristics of this the performers in the outfit such as the stripes from the mime artists and the top hat which is normally seen on a ring master. The facial expression on her face makes the audience feel that she is an approachable person and the body jester that she is positioned in makes us feel that she is welcoming us into her circus.

The third advert I am going to analyse is one for the singer Kesha. This advert is selling a remix song which includes her as one of the artists. The mise-en-scene background which the artist is standing in front of is a plain white brick wall. This colour matches the same colour in her top. On her top it had a skeleton rib cage print.  It makes her leather jacket stand out in the picture to the audience along with the biker gloves. The outfit give off a rebellious appearance like she does not care how she looks or what people think of her. The rebellion is shown in the poster is with the torn edge between the black right hand side of the poster with the information on and the picture of her. As well as the torn edge, on top of the image the audience can see stitches. High key lighting is used to make the artist stand out in the poster. There is red text used on the other side to inform the audience about this remix song. The red could represent her dangerous personality. The white font which her name is in is the same texture and colour as the background which the artist is standing in front of. The facial expression that she has in this poster does not make her look friendly and approachable.

Mind Map on the Pop Music Genre.

Genre Research 1

The sub genre that I am exploring in Pop is Dance pop. What I have noticed from this mood board is that in Dance pop videos the creators use alot of effects and make up is warn in an extreme way. Also, the costumes are not an every day what people would wear but an over the top style outfit that is in the fashion of the artist. Bright colour can sometimes be used in the videos. Dancing and lights are also used to get the high key lighting and the Genre stand out andare obvious to the audience who are watching it. The colours used in the shots interact and combine with each other and expression with the music.
